Knowing the causes and how to fix them could save you from a possible traffic ticket and also, more importantly, prevent you from being rear-ended from a car who has trouble seeing you at night. We’ve compiled some helpful information about tail light failure so you know when it’s time to head to the auto shop.

Causes of Tail Light Failure

Unfortunately, it is hard to tell when a tail light has gone out, as the light is positioned behind you. Because the tail light bulb operates both the tail light and the brake lights of most modern cars, it is important to replace it as soon as you notice and issue. It could be a simple issue of an old bulb needing replacing, but there are a multitude of other reasons why a tail light might go out because of an underlying issue.

Blown Fuses

This is a common problem with most lights. A blown fuse can happen at the drop of a hat and are typically caused by an overloaded circuit or a short circuit. A blown fuse is typically a localized problem and will resolve when you replace the bulb with a new one. If the problem persists, then it could mean that the circuits in your lamp cluster are overloaded and are causing shortages. Be sure to tell your mechanic if you’ve already replaced the bulb once and yet still have a tail light failure.

Corrosion

Corrosion is never a word you want to hear in relation to one of the components of your car. Corrosion happens when a substance has eaten away at the metal parts of your car. Unfortunately, this can happen with your tail light sockets if they aren’t screwed in place tightly enough. Corrosion is essentially a form of rust and can be identified by rust spots or a white powdery substance. If you want to attempt to clean the rust from the socket, you can try a solution of vinegar or baking soda, but typically, a corroded socket will mean the need for a full replacement. This could be the reason why a light replacement keeps going out. If you’re able to fix it or get it fixed, you shouldn’t have to worry about wasting money on replaced tail lights in the near future.

Broken or Frayed Wires

Faulty wiring can be one of the issues related to why you’re continuously seeing a new tail light burn out within days or weeks of replacement. The wiring in your car’s lamp cluster can wear down as your car ages. Over time, it may become weakened, frayed, or even break. If the wiring is faulty, you may be able to temporarily replace your light and have it work until such time you can have your wiring looked at by a professional. If the wiring is broken, you’ll notice that a replacement tail light will not fix the problem and you’ll need to see a mechanic right away for your safety, as driving without a tail light may leave you vulnerable to collision.
